The Williamsport Area School District is accepting applications for a Full Time, 1st Shift Groundskeeper/Custodian (Class 2) position at the Williamsport Area High School, subject to the determination of the Superintendent.  This position is 8 hours per day, 250 days per school year.  Minimum job requirements include, but are not limited to, a high school diploma or equivalent, or Associate's Degree in the Landscaping Trade discipline.  Five to ten years verifiable work experience in landscapring design and construction is required.  See Job Description below for basic information about duties and requirements. Job Description Custodian II-Groundskeeper

Basic Functions:

This position ensures the upkeep, cleanliness, and improvement of all grounds, athletic fields, grounds equipment and exterior buildings, parking lots and sidewalks associated with school/district grounds. 

 

Other Functions:

Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an effective and efficient work environment.

 

Education & Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent, or Associate Degree in the Landscaping trade discipline.  5-10 years verifiable work experience in landscaping design and construction required. 

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Current Pennsylvania Automobile Driver’s License

PA Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification, 00- core (within 90 days of hire in this position)

PA Pesticide Certification Type 24-Swimming Pools (within 90 days of hire in this position)

PA Pesticide Certification Type 23-Park/School (within 90 days of hire in this position)

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios. Read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: safe practices and procedures in using tools and materials related to outdoor ground maintenance, landscaping methods, and techniques.  This position requires a high level of responsibility to adhere to code requirements of federal, state, and local agency guidelines.

 

It is essential to have the ability to maintain continuing education credits in order to meet changing job conditions and licensure in accordance with the PA Dept. of Agriculture. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices, operating equipment used in grounds maintenance including snowplowing, mowing, power driven equipment, tractor, dump truck, mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, etc.  It is essential to have computer skills and the ability to use Microsoft word processing and spreadsheet programs to prepare and maintain pesticide and equipment records and logs.

 

Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances.  It is essential to have the ability to work with data utilizing defined and similar processes for varying pesticide applications and be able to work with others when problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans.

 

 

Authority & Responsibilities:

  1. Performs all Grounds keeping duties as assigned. (E)
    1. Applies pesticides and/or chemicals for the purpose of ensuring that the spraying is done in compliance with all requirements of the laws of federal, state, and local governments.(E)
    2. Assists other maintenance personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. (E)
    3. Cleans grounds and related areas (e.g. gutters, drains, filters/screens, snow removal etc.)(E)
    4. Inspects grounds and equipment (e.g. playground equipment, fences, irrigation systems, retaining walls, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safety and identifying necessary repairs and providing an ongoing program of preventive/predictive maintenance. (E)
    5. Maintains landscaping (e.g. lawns, shrubbery, planted areas, mulched areas, fences, concrete areas, asphalt areas, playground, etc.) for the purpose of preserving grounds in a healthy, attractive and safe condition. (E)
    6. Maintains tools and equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items in safe operating condition. (E)
    7. Performs general maintenance work (e.g. roof, spouting, concrete, masonry, painting, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining outside facilities in a safe condition enabling full educational use of the facilities at all times. (E)
    8. Removes graffiti as needed.(E)
    9. Removes trash from exterior/outdoor trash receptacles. (E)
    10. Prepares documentation for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information. (E)
    11. Prepares roadways, parking lots, grounds, and athletic fields (e.g. assembly of equipment/seating, painting, measuring, burning lines, etc.) for the purpose of providing adequate, attractive and safe areas within district facilities. (E)
    12. Procures equipment, supplies, and materials for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required tools and materials. (E)
    13. Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns. (E)
    14. Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, fuel, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at the site/building. (E)
    15. Takes appropriate action to protect district property. (E)
    16. Other duties related to maintaining district grounds. (E) 
  1. Performs all cleaning duties as assigned.  (E)
    1. Prepares building for daily operations; (E)
    2. Cleans and disinfects classrooms, small group areas, office areas, etc.; (E)
    3. Cleans and disinfects cafeterias, restrooms, and locker rooms; (E)
    4. Restocks bathroom supplies daily (toilet paper, paper towels, soap dispensers, etc.); (E)
    5. Cleans hallways; (E)
    6. Cleans ceiling louvers and univent intakes and outtakes; (E)
    7. Cleans and sanitizes water fountains (E)
    8. Removes graffiti as needed; (E)
    9. Removes trash; (E)
    10. Appropriately cleans up spills, vomit, and body fluids as needed; (E)
    11. Maintains carpeted areas including vacuuming, shampooing, and extracting; (E)
    12. Cleans windows; (E)
    13. Strips and seals floors as needed; (E)
    14. Maintains cleaning equipment according to guidelines; (E)
    15. Monitors building conditions such as freezers, coolers, pool, heating and air conditioning; (E)
    16. Performs all other cleaning functions as instructed. (E) 
  1. Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an effective and efficient work environment. (E) 
  1. Completes repair requests and submits to the Head Custodian. (E) 
  1. Maintains confidentiality of all business related information. (E) 
  1. Performs other related functions as directed by the Supervisor of Maintenance & Facility Operations, Assistant Supervisor of Maintenance & Facility Operations, and his/her designee. (E) 

Physical Requirements:

 

VERY HEAVY- Exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

 

Position requires the following physical movements:  climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, and balancing.

 

This position requires the ability to work from ladders and scaffolding as necessary.

 

Auditory and Visual Requirements:

Within normal ranges with or without correction.

 

Equipment Used:

Position requires the use of cleaning equipment, hand tools, power machinery/tools, and vehicles.

 

 

Exposures/Hazards:

Position requires exposure to some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions.
